The Project

The Les Echets – La Boisse section (13 km) of the A432 motorway connects the A42 and A46 motorways.

This is a major link in the national road network from the north to the west towards the Alps, enabling traffic to bypass Lyon.

This section includes:

  • A 13 km 2×2 lane section twinned with the South-East high-speed rail line
  • Two motorway interchanges with the A46 North and the A42 and A432 South
  • An exceptional 2×3 lane viaduct, 1,200 m long
  • 15 small bridge structures
  • The reinstatement of the Lyon – Bourg-en-Bresse rail link over a 1 km stretch, with notably a 90 m bridge crossing over the A46

The project also involved the creation of a partial interchange on the A46 South, linked to the RD38, and the widening of the A46 to 2×3 lanes on a 2 km section.

Challenges

Project owner
APRR (Autoroutes-Paris-Rhin-Rhône)

Period
2007 – 2010

Key figures
A 13 km 2×2 lane motorway twinned with the south-east high-speed rail line
2 motorway interchanges
La Cotière Viaduct
A partial interchange on the RD38

Challenge
RFF (the former name for SNCF Réseau) delegated project management to APRR for the deviation of the Lyon – Bourg-en-Bresse railway line. setec provided civil engineering design and supervision for the reinstatement of this line during the construction work.

The Assignment

APRR appointed setec to manage the design (preliminary and detailed) and construction work on this motorway section, as well as provide contractor assistance:

  • Design (interchange and toll station)
  • Bridges and viaducts
  • Motorway sanitation
  • Environmental studies
  • Hydraulic design
  • Landscaping and architectural planning
  • Topographic study
  • Geotechnical study
  • Drafting of regulatory documents: public utility declaration, urban planning, water law, protected species, land clearing, public consultation, etc.

For the La Côtière Viaduct, setec provided contractor assistance under a design-build contract awarded through an architectural design competition. This involved examining the design documents and supporting the project owner in the construction phase.
